Truck compressor refrigerators of the future will generate electricity

The emergence of portable compressor coolers, which have so much improved the quality of life for truck drivers and professionals in the road transport sector, was a real revolution. But this technical improvement could fall short if the research work carried out by a team of researchers from the University of Barcelona, who are developing a technology that would make it possible to take advantage of the heat given off by refrigerators (such as the impressive CDF 36 or the TC 21, both of the Waeco brand) and convert it into electrical energy that could power other electronic devices.

The first prototype of portable electric refrigerator (or rather of the "Peltier cells",  the ceramic device of refrigerators of compressor  that allows cooling and heating") that is already capable of generating energy is being developed by the  spin-off company AEInnova (Alternative Energy Innovations). This first prototype has been able to recover up to 20% of the heat residual generated by the compressor, with an efficiency of 90%.The main novelty of the work of AEInnova is that its prototypes are capable of generating 9 watts of current and (for a thermal differential of 100 degrees of temperature) while other previous devices from other scientists could only provide a maximum of 2 watts of power.  The secret of the improvement is that the technicians have been able to link the "cells" through an innovative electronic component  that allows each "Peltier cell" of the refrigerator compressor to take advantage of part of the electricity generated by the "cell "which is next to you. This "communication"  allows adding electrical potential without loss of energy. Thus, each "cell" generates the greatest possible power and a recovery of 90% of the total heat generated is achieved, which is what can be reused as electrical energy.

The project has recently been awarded by the Fundación Repsol Entrepreneurs Fund (in the Ideas category) and has also won awards in the national EcoEmprendedor XXI contest and in the Sustainable Building Entrepreneurship, organized by the prestigious Green Building Council.
