AI-powered cameras in Catalonia: Distraction controls on the A-2 and AP-7

Aug. 24, 2026

For a professional driver, maintaining their license points and avoiding penalties is as vital as keeping their engine in top condition. If your regular routes cross Catalonia, this is for you: the Catalan Traffic Service (SCT) has just released the results of a pilot test with a new technology that will change the game in road safety enforcement.

It involves high-definition cameras equipped with Artificial Intelligence (AI), capable of detecting infractions that previously went unnoticed by conventional fixed speed cameras.

AI-powered cameras in Catalonia: Distraction controls on the A-2 and AP-7
How do they work and what exactly do they detect?

Unlike traditional gantries, this device consists of a mobile trailer that can be moved and hidden at different strategic points on the road network, making it impossible to memorize its location.

Thanks to an advanced algorithm, the system continuously analyzes high-definition images from inside the booths to automatically identify two specific risk behaviors:

• Mobile phone on lap: It's no longer enough to simply not have the phone pressed against your ear. The AI perfectly detects if you're holding the device on your lap or on your legs.

This is a very dangerous behavior in trucks because it forces the driver to look down and take their eyes off the road. • Incorrect use of the seatbelt: The algorithm identifies if you are not wearing it or if you are wearing it incorrectly (for example, under your arm or improperly adjusted). More than 13,000 violations in just two months. The pilot test was carried out on two of the roads with the highest density of heavy goods vehicles in the country: the A-2 (with peaks of 5% of violations in Cornellà de Llobregat) and the AP-7. The algorithm's accuracy has been remarkable, catching more than 8,500 cases of improper mobile phone use and 4,500 seatbelt violations in just 60 days. The published data shows that mobile phone distractions are concentrated on weekdays (Wednesday to Friday) and during peak logistics route hours: from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
When will they start issuing fines?

Although this phase has been a trial to test the technology, Trànsit has already confirmed that it plans to permanently incorporate these mobile enforcement trailers in the upcoming 2027-2030 Road Safety Plan. This means that AI-powered automated fines will soon become part of your daily routine on the road.

Avoid penalties: Get your cabin accessories in top condition

The elevated position of a truck cab no longer protects you from the view of law enforcement officers; the overhead cameras on these trailers see everything. To avoid fines of €200 and the loss of up to 6 points on your license, prevention in your fleet or truck is key:

• Professional mobile phone holders: Keep your phone fixed, at eye level, and without obstructing the roadway. It is strictly forbidden to touch it while driving, but using an approved holder prevents it from falling or from the temptation to put it on your lap.

• Hands-free systems: Make sure your truck's Bluetooth or your hands-free system is working correctly so you can take logistics calls without taking your hands off the wheel.

• Seat belt check: If your seat anchor is faulty, doesn't tighten properly, or the webbing is frayed, the AI could register a false positive, or you could travel unsafely. Replacing the restraint mechanism in time is vital.

At our parts store, we're not just concerned with your truck's engine performing at its best; we care about your safety and protecting your work vehicle. Safe travels and keep your eyes on the road!
