Toyota Innovation in China: New Electric SUV and Autonomous Driving

July 5, 2024

Toyota, one of the giants of the automotive industry, is preparing a significant launch in the Chinese market: an electric SUV with advanced autonomous driving systems, scheduled for 2025. This strategic move seeks to position the brand on par with competitors such as Tesla in a market where demand for electric vehicles (EV) is booming.

Toyota Innovation in China: New Electric SUV and Autonomous Driving
The Bozhi 3X model and the collaboration with Momenta Global

Toyota's upcoming electric SUV, known as the Bozhi 3X, will not be a conventional electric vehicle. The key to its innovation lies in the autonomous driving systems it will integrate, developed in collaboration with the Chinese startup Momenta Global. This company, specialized in artificial intelligence and autonomous driving technologies, brings its expertise to equip the Bozhi 3X with advanced functions ranging from parking assistance to autonomous driving on highways and in urban traffic. This technology will allow Toyota to compete directly with Tesla's offerings in the Chinese market, which is the largest automotive market in the world and one of the most advanced in terms of adoption of EVs and autonomous driving technologies.

Battery strategy: Lithium and iron phosphate

In addition to autonomous driving systems, Toyota is also making progress in developing new battery technologies for its electric vehicles. By 2026-2027, the company plans to launch a new lithium iron phosphate battery. This battery will not only improve the performance and durability of the vehicles, but will also enable a significant cost reduction, estimated at 40%, in the production of the bZ4X EV model. This cost reduction is crucial to making EVs more accessible and price competitive, both in the Chinese market and globally.

Strategic alliance with Huawei

A highlight of Toyota's strategy in China is its collaboration with Huawei, one of the leaders in technology and telecommunications. Toyota will use Huawei's operating software in its electric vehicles, starting with a new electric sedan scheduled to be launched in 2025. This partnership will allow Toyota to integrate advanced software and connectivity capabilities into its vehicles, offering an improved and more competitive user experience. Huawei's software is known for its robustness and adaptability, which will be a significant added value for Toyota vehicles.

Implications for Toyota's future in China

These initiatives by Toyota are not only designed to regain market share in China, but also to position the company as a leader in technological innovation within the automotive sector. The adoption of autonomous driving technologies, the development of more efficient batteries and the integration of advanced software are key components of a strategy that seeks sustainability and the cutting edge of electric mobility.

China represents a crucial market for any car manufacturer, and Toyota's commitment to this market reflects its commitment to growth and innovation. With these actions, Toyota is not only competing with other foreign brands, but is also setting new standards in terms of technology and efficiency in the electric and autonomous vehicle market.

Toyota's entry into the electric and autonomous vehicle market in China with the launch of the Bozhi 3X, the development of new batteries and the collaboration with Huawei, underlines its commitment to innovation and sustainability. This comprehensive approach ensures that Toyota not only remains competitive, but also leads the way into the future of electric and autonomous mobility.
