In September the CO2 tax arrives in Catalonia

April 30, 2021

On September 15, 2021, the Government of Catalonia will begin to collect the CO2 tax, which will even affect vehicles considered ECO. We explain what it consists of, who will have to pay it and how to know how much you will pay. This new tax will affect passenger cars, motorcycles and vans.

In September the CO2 tax arrives in Catalonia
The tax on carbon dioxide (CO2)

The Parliament of Catalonia approved in 2017, included in its law against climate change, a tax to tax carbon dioxide emissions from vehicles. Its entry into force was scheduled for 2018, but finally, the Catalan executive, and due to various reasons, such as the pandemic that we have been suffering for more than a year, has been postponing its entry into force, which will finally be in May 2021.

With this measure, the Generalitat expects to collect 150 million euros per year.

Its amount will depend on the type of vehicle and its characteristics, varying from six euros to 60 euros per car per year.

What vehicles will have to pay it?

Included in the tax are passenger cars with up to nine seats, those that do not exceed 3,500 kilograms of maximum mass admitted, and motorcycles.

In 2021, vehicles with emissions greater than 120 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer will begin to pay the tax. It should be noted that in 2021 the 2020 tax will be paid.

In next year's tribute, in which the tax will be paid for the year 2021, emissions will be reduced and vehicles that exceed 95 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer will have to pay it.

Ambulances, official cars, electric cars, mopeds and vehicles with a maximum authorized mass of more than 3,500 kilograms will be exempt from this tax.

How much will they have to pay?

Starting tomorrow, May 1, 2021, the Generalitat will publish a register with the list of all affected vehicles and the fee for each specific vehicle. This register will be available on the website of the Catalan Tax Agency starting tomorrow.

In the event that an error is detected in this list, the owners of affected vehicles in Catalonia will have until June 4 to request modifications and the list will be closed on September 1.

The amount to be paid will depend on the motorization of the vehicles, provided that they exceed the limits of 120 and 95 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer, respectively, in the years 2020 and 2021, which, as we have already mentioned they will be paid the following year, in 2021 the 2020 tax will be paid, with a limit of 120 grams of CO2/km and in 2022 the 2021 tax will be paid, with a limit of 95 grams of CO2/km.

There are also other characteristics that have already transpired, such as SUV-type vehicles will pay more than compact vehicles or that many hybrid models, which carry an ECO label, will also have to pay it in 2022 (paying the tax for the 2021 financial year) as many exceed emissions of 95 grams of carbon dioxide.

How to consult the census or request modifications?

To check the exact fee you will have to pay for your vehicles, you must go to THIS WEBSITE starting tomorrow. There you can make a basic query with your DNI number and the vehicle registration number or a complete query if you have the IdCAT Mòbil digital identification, which can be easily obtained online, and on the same website you will find information on how to obtain it.

With the basic consultation you can only consult one by one the amount of the tax on your vehicles. It will be necessary to make a complete query, accessing with the IdCAT, to see at once all the vehicles you own and their corresponding tax. This full access will also be required for the other procedures related to the tax: direct debit of the annual receipt, modifying data from the register before June 4, and consulting the history of transactions made, related to the tax.
