The Basque company Transordizia is a leader in the use of LNG in its fleet. Of the 125 trucks available to the Irún firm to transport industrial vehicles, 25 are Iveco Stralis. The company has opted for ecological fuel because, although the trucks are more expensive than conventional diesel-powered ones, in three or four years the extra cost of the investment in the purchase is recovered thanks to cost savings. Transordizia plans to invest around 2.5 million euros in purchasing new LNG-powered trucks.
According to experts, it is a matter of time before LNG becomes the quintessential fuel for transport trucks by highway. From the Iberian Association of Natural Gas for Mobility (Gasnam) they do not stop repeating that "the expansion of the use of gas in heavy trucks is unstoppable and, for the international transport of goods by road, it is today the only option really available and proven.”
There are already large Spanish companies, such as Mahou San Miguel or Mercadona, that already ask their distributors to have less polluting fleets. In France, the distributors of large supermarkets such as Casino or Carrefour have already signed up to make their fleets more ecological because it is a matter of time before the accesses to large cities such as Paris do not take long to restrict the access of diesel trucks to the urban helmets.
