Free tolls in Catalonia and Aragon

Sept. 7, 2021

Since September 1, a large part of the Catalan and Aragonese tolls have been eliminated. We explain which highways have become free, those that are still paid and those that stopped being paid a few months ago.

Free tolls in Catalonia and Aragon
Highways that become free

This past September 1, the concessions of the main toll roads in Catalonia and Aragon ended. The Government and the Generalitat agreed not to renew these concessions with the respective concessionaire companies, which, until now, were in charge of maintenance and which, at the time, financed its construction.

It has been 40 years of concessions and tolls, renewed over and over again, which finally end this month. Now, the Government and the Generalitat are studying new forms of payment to defray the maintenance costs of these roads.

The highways that from September 1 become free are:

- AP-2 from Alfajarín, in the province of Zaragoza, and El Vendrell, in the province of Tarragona. The free section in this case will be 215 kilometers. Until now, traveling this route in its entirety meant a cost of €20.65.

  • AP-7 from La Jonquera, in the province of Girona, on the border with France, to Salou, in the province of Tarragona. A total of 245 kilometres, which until now cost €28.85.
  • C-32 from Barcelona to Lloret de Mar, in the province of Girona. A total of 48 kilometres, which until now involved paying €4.32 in tolls.
  • C-33 from Barcelona to Montmeló. A total of 26 kilometers with a cost up to now of €1.75.
Highways that continue to be paid

The main toll motorways disappear, but there will still be some with tolls in Catalonia. They are the following:

  • C-32 from Castelldefels to El Vendrell
  • C-16 in three sections: the Cadí Tunnel, the Vallvidrera tunnels and the Sant Cugat-Manresa section.
Spanish highways that have already become free

The AP-1, which connects Burgos and Armiñón, in the province of Álava, was in 2018 the first toll road that did not renew its concession in the entire Spanish territory.

On January 1, 2020, it was joined by two important sections, the AP-7 from Salou to Alicante and the AP-4, from Seville to Cádiz.
