When to replace your truck's air filters

Today's trucks are typically equipped with two air filters: one for air intended for the cabin and one for air needed for combustion in the engine.

Logically both are important but the engine is the most relevant in order to avoid breakdowns. This is in charge of filtering particles and impurities from the air that reaches the cylinders to make combustion possible and, therefore, will keep the engine free of these possible contaminants, lengthening its life.

When the filter is no longer in optimal conditions, its filtering effectiveness is reduced, producing an increase in fuel costs and, in the long term, the definitive deterioration of the truck's engine.

Each manufacturer marks in the maintenance plan of each truck an optimal frequency for the replacement of the air filter. You will find this information in your truck manual. Normally it never exceeds 40,000 kilometers.

Although the frequency is marked by the manufacturer, it may have to be changed beforehand depending on the activity that the truck usually carries out. If your truck only travels on paved roads, it will not change, but if, for example, it usually moves on unpaved roads, the dust can clog the filter before time and it must be replaced before the time set by the manufacturer.

Many trucks have sensors that indicate when it begins to clog, warning of the need to replace it.

In case of not replacing the engine air filter when it is clogged or touches by the periodicity marked by the manufacturer, the consequences will be the following:

• The engine must work harder to get the clean air needed for combustion and this excess effort wears out the cylinders.
• In addition, this excess effort causes an increase in fuel consumption
• The power is also affected, being reduced by not having the necessary air flow for its correct operation.
• In extreme situations it can cause sudden engine stops

There is a wide variety of air filters on the market, for the different existing truck models. Before changing your engine air filter, you should go to a specialized center where they will guide you on the specific filter for your make and model of truck.

The price of engine air filters is usually very cheap, and more so if we compare it with the consequences and costs related to a clogged filter. Also make sure that the filter is of quality so that it prevents impurities from entering your engine throughout its useful life.

In addition, they can be replaced by oneself, even without having knowledge of mechanics. Your truck's manual will specify how you should replace both this filter and the cabin air filter.
