In today's freight transport landscape, innovation is key to reducing emissions and moving towards a more sustainable future. One of the companies leading this change is MAN Truck & Bus, which has been awarded the Truck Innovation Award 2025 for the third time. The award was given at the IAA Commercial Vehicles trade fair, one of the most important events in the sector. On this occasion, the company has been recognised for its hydrogen-powered truck, the MAN hTGX, a vehicle that promises to revolutionise heavy transport with its zero-emission technology.
The MAN hTGX is a hydrogen-powered combustion truck that complements MAN's range of battery-electric vehicles. This vehicle is designed for specific applications requiring high performance and considerable range, offering an alternative to electric trucks in environments where charging infrastructure is not suitable or in markets where hydrogen is already available. The hTGX has been classified as a zero-emission vehicle, which is a crucial step in the decarbonisation of road transport.
This truck not only stands out for its innovative drive system, but also for its performance similar to that of traditional diesel trucks. During a test in Saalfelden, Austria, specialist journalists praised its handling and performance, powered by the 16.8-litre H4576 inline six-cylinder engine, which uses hydrogen as fuel.
The MAN hTGX's most notable features include its range of up to 600 kilometres thanks to its high-pressure hydrogen tank, with a capacity of 700 bars and 56 kilos. In addition, its exhaust gas aftertreatment system is much simpler than that of diesel trucks, making it a more efficient and environmentally friendly option.
This truck will be available in 6x2 and 6x4 axle configurations, allowing for a high load capacity, making it ideal for transporting heavy goods such as construction materials, tanks or wood. The H45 engine of the MAN hTGX is based on the proven D38 diesel engine, ensuring reliability and high performance.
Production of this innovative vehicle will begin with a limited series of 200 units that will be delivered to customers in Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Iceland and other selected countries outside Europe in 2025. This marks a milestone in the transport industry, as MAN Truck & Bus will become the first European manufacturer to produce trucks with hydrogen combustion engines in series.
The Truck Innovation Award is one of the most prestigious awards in the commercial vehicle industry. It is awarded by the International Truck of the Year (IToy) jury, which is made up of specialist journalists from all over Europe. The award recognises technological innovation and the impact that new developments can have on the transport industry.
This is the third time that MAN Truck & Bus has received this award. In 2024, the company was awarded for its autonomous driving projects ANITA and ATLAS-L4, and in 2019, the AFAS automated construction protection vehicle was the winner of the award.
The success of the MAN hTGX is not only a triumph for MAN Truck & Bus, but also a significant step towards sustainability in freight transport. The introduction of hydrogen combustion vehicles offers a viable alternative to electric trucks, especially in specialised applications or in areas where charging infrastructure is not yet developed.
This new development demonstrates that hydrogen technology can play a pivotal role in the transition to emission-free transport, providing innovative and sustainable solutions for the needs of the industry.
With this truck, MAN Truck & Bus reaffirms its commitment to reducing emissions and its leadership in developing environmentally friendly transport solutions. As technology advances, we are likely to see an increase in the adoption of hydrogen trucks and other clean technologies, paving the way for a greener and more efficient future for freight transport.
