Originally, all trucks purchased after August 21, 2023 were required to equip a second-generation digital tachograph. However, due to the shortage of these devices, the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) allowed vehicles with first-generation tachographs to be registered until December 31, 2023. This temporary solution has left vehicle owners in regulatory limbo. , waiting for a definitive answer.
Trucks up to ten years old must pass the ITV annually, while those over ten years old require a semi-annual inspection. Vehicles registered on August 18 but purchased later, until December 31, face confusion about when they should have their next MOT. Should they be guided by the registration date of August 18 or by the actual purchase date?
This situation particularly affects international transport operators. According to FENADISMER, around 2,000 vehicles will need to replace their first-generation digital tachograph with a second-generation one before August 2025 to comply with international transport regulations. These are added to the more than 140,000 vehicles registered before June 15, 2019, which must also make this replacement.
With only two models of second generation digital tachograph approved to date, and given the need to update thousands of vehicles not only in Spain but throughout the European Union, concern arises as to whether the industry and authorized workshops will be prepared to meet this demand.
