Types of motor oils

Dec. 19, 2020

In this article we summarize the types of lubricants available for your vehicle on the market and their characteristics.

What does your number mean? How often does it have to be changed? Or in what temperatures does it work best? These are questions that you will answer in this article.

Choose well between the different options, based on the characteristics of your car or truck, to ensure a long life for your engine and avoid costly repairs.

Types of motor oils
The importance of lubrication in a vehicle

Motor oil protects your engine parts and lubricates them, preventing excessive wear on them. Over time, changes in temperature and its use cause it to degrade, losing part of its lubricating properties, and must be changed.

The person who knows your engine best is the person who created it and, therefore, is It is very important to follow the instructions given by the manufacturer of each model. The manufacturer will guide you on what type of oil you should use and how often it should be changed.

Another aspect to take into account regarding lubrication is the amount of oil in your engine. The use of the vehicle causes the volume of oil, burned in combustion, to reduce more or less quickly depending on the state of the parts of your engine, mainly the cylinder liners and piston rings. < /p>

Make sure your engine oil level is optimal to avoid problems of overheating and excessive wear.

Types of motor oil: monograde and multigrade

They are mainly divided into two large categories: monograde and multigrade.

The name indicates the characteristic that differentiates them:

Monogrades only have one degree of viscosity and are almost it is not used. They are only applicable to carbureted engines, which are already in danger of extinction.

Multigrades, on the other hand, vary in viscosity grade depending on the temperature in which they are found. This is important for cold starting.

The viscosity grade range of a multigrade oil is indicated by a code. 5W30 or 10W40 are examples. This code indicates with its first number the ease of this oil to flow at low temperatures and the lower this first number is, the better it is. Specifically, it indicates the viscosity of the oil at -18ºC. The second number indicates the viscosity when the oil reaches 100ºC. The W stands for Winter and indicates that it is suitable for low temperatures.

Types of multigrade motor oil

There are three types of multigrade motor oils: synthetic, semi-synthetic or mineral.

synthetic motor oil

They are the following: 5W30, 5W40 and 5W50.

They are oils designed to work correctly between 10,000 and 30,000 km. That is why they are known as long-life oils.

It depends on the manufacturer but there are many who advise replacing it every 30,000 km or after 2 years. In this way, although its price is somewhat higher, adequate protection is achieved for a longer period, thus reducing the costs derived from vehicle maintenance.

Within this category there are those with low viscosity (0W -20 and 5W-30) designed for hybrid or plug-in hybrid vehicles. Thanks to their low viscosity, they protect the engine from wear, in the most demanding working conditions of these vehicles, with its continuous on-off. These new generation lubricants also reduce consumption under normal driving conditions and, consequently, the vehicle's CO2 emissions.

semi-synthetic oils

They are coded as 10W40. They are usually used in shorter periods, recommending their change every 7,000 km.

mineral oils

They are the 15w40 and the 20w50. With both, it is recommended to change the oil every 5,000 km

The 15w40 are suitable for gasoline and diesel engines and work without problem in outside temperature ranges of -10ºC and 40ºC.

The 20w50 are designed for vehicles with more wear and tear as they can withstand high working temperatures.
