Autonomous trucks put professional drivers on alert

Nov. 14, 2016
A few weeks ago, a Volvo truck from the Otto company (owned by Uber) became the first to make a delivery of merchandise (specifically beers) without being driven by a trucker on almost the entire 194-kilometer route. This milestone occurred in Colorado Springs (USA). The "feat" has not gone unnoticed by the road transport sector, spare parts and logistics professionals who have already begun to question the suitability of the "invention" and raise questions about how it will affect professionals.
Autonomous trucks put professional drivers on alert

According to the Otto company, 94% of traffic accidents are caused by human error. Therefore, if the "human factor" is reduced to a minimum, in principle, the accident rate would be reduced and, consequently, fatal occupational accidents. But if the driver only has to be aware of the steering wheel during loading and the first kilometers of driving in urban areas and at the end of the journey, in the last section before unloading, will his salary be the same? It will be reduced? These are two unknowns that have yet to be revealed.

On the other hand, the system also has logistical advantages, such as the fact that drivers can rest on very long journeys and never drive more hours than recommended, one of the factors that lead to accidents. But will the sector accept this change? No one has yet made any official comment on the matter, but it is still true that a certain (although very limited) uneasiness is beginning to be breathed in the world of trucks, due to that uncertainty.

What is It is clear that if autonomous driving systems for Otto-type trucks are implemented and generalized, the legislation must be adapted and a new labor framework created, which does not harm working conditions or reduce salaries. It could even go further. The trucking profession could even become a hindrance. Until now, no association in the transport sector has wanted to make public its position on this issue, but there is no doubt that if Otto's experience begins to spread, they will have to take action on the matter.

While the The sector begins to accept that times of change are coming, at recambiosdelcamion.com we remain unshakable with our philosophy of offering high-quality products and leading brands at very affordable prices, with constant offers, discounts and promotions.
